Administrative Law Forum 2014

AGS Administrative Law Forum

Hotel Realm, Canberra, Thursday 6 November, 9 am – 4 pm

Administrative law: the state of play in 2014

Administrative law is central to the functioning of the Australian Government. This forum will bring you up to date with the latest developments in administrative law and the practical implications for Commonwealth decision-makers and lawyers. You will hear about key themes emerging from recent case law on judicial review grounds and remedies; practical issues relating to the jurisdiction of State courts and tribunals where proceedings involve, or may involve, the Commonwealth; recent developments in US administrative law and how these inform the Australian experience; procedural challenges associated with automated decision-making; limits on the broader use of documents produced in tribunal proceedings; and the role of tribunals in conducting merits review and the design and practical operation of new merits review regimes.

Expert speakers include the Hon Justice Mortimer, Federal Court of Australia; Judge Jeffrey Sutton, United States Court of Appeals; Justin Gleeson SC, Solicitor-General and AGS's leading counsel and administrative law lawyers, who have extensive practical experience assisting Commonwealth decision-makers, and defending Commonwealth decisions in courts and tribunals.
