The Australian Government Solicitor

Matthew is the Australian Government Solicitor. Appointed in June 2023, he leads the AGS Group within the department. Before this role, Matthew was the National Leader of AGS Dispute Resolution, a position he held from 2011. Prior to being National Leader, Matthew was the leader of the AGS Canberra DR practice following a 5 year secondment to the ACCC running competition and consumer litigation.

He has over 25 years’ experience as a Commonwealth lawyer advising Government and running litigation for the Commonwealth – from regulatory law matters, to misfeasance class actions, to commercial disputes, to challenges to administrative decision making and to matters concerning Australia’s national security.

Matthew is often called on to provide strategic advice in matters of particular sensitivity to agencies and senior members of the Government.
