Lukic, Dejan
Senior Executive Lawyer
Dejan is a senior litigation and dispute resolution practitioner who provides a high level of strategic expertise across a number of areas of law.
Having first joined AGS in 2009, Dejan has practised as senior lawyer in AGS Dispute Resolution’s administrative law, employment law and national security law teams.
He has conducted litigation on behalf of a number of high-profile clients, including in the High Court, Federal Court, Supreme Court of Victoria and the Coroner’s Court. Dejan now leads and mentors a growing team of lawyers on various highly complex, highly contested and high profile civil claims against the Commonwealth, including class actions.
In 2019, he received an Australia Day Achievement Award for outstanding professionalism and dedication. Before coming to AGS, Dejan had significant experience in the public service, having worked previously as the Manager of the External Appeals and Family Law section of ComSuper (now the Commonwealth Superannuation Corporation).
Recent experience
- conducted on behalf of the Commonwealth of DBE17 v Commonwealth (No (VID1392 of 2019)), a Federal Court class action for damages for false imprisonment brought on behalf of about 45,000-plus group members who were placed in immigration detention
- conduct on behalf of the Commonwealth of a cohort of approximately 100 proceedings before the Federal Court and other courts commenced by asylum seekers (claiming breach of duty of care) who upon their arrival to Australia were taken to the regional processing countries, including conduct of a related High Court appeal from the judgment of the Full Court of the Federal Court in FRM17 v Minister of Home Affairs [2019] FCAFC 148
- Conduct of 2 recently settled Federal Court class actions brought on behalf of asylum seekers who were taken to regional processing countries for processing of their claims: see AUB v Commonwealth of Australia [2019] FCA 1722
- conducted on behalf of the Commonwealth of a counter terrorism related claim for assault and battery, resulting in the successful removal of the Commonwealth as a party to the proceeding.
