Senior General Counsel
Ali provides advice primarily on law enforcement issues, statutory interpretation and constitutional law, including advising on constitutional issues across a number of portfolios.
She regularly advises on key Commonwealth legislation including the Migration Act 1958, the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979, the Intelligence Services Act 2001, the Maritime Powers Act 2013 and the Criminal Code Act 1995. She combines a high level of academic rigour with diverse experience and excellent communication skills to provide quality legal advice.
Ali’s work on a range of issues for operational agencies is assisted by her previous experience as a legal officer in the Royal Australian Navy, where she gained substantial experience in the provision of legal advice on the application of Defence-related legislation and international law, particularly in the operational context. She was awarded a Chief of Joint Operations Gold Commendation in 2018.
