Congratulations Paul Lang PSM RFD

AGS Deputy General Counsel Commercial Paul Lang RFD has been awarded the Public Service Medal in the 2017 Australia Day honours.

The award was for 'outstanding public service through the provision of legal advice to the Commonwealth'.

The citation describes Paul's outstanding contributions, including key work on asset sales and privatisations in the 1990s, extending to transactions involving Qantas, Australian Airlines and federally owned airports; strategic advice on significant Commonwealth industry-funding projects in the early 2000s; and his guidance and legal leadership in a wide range of Defence projects, including the Future Submarine Program. He is also recognised as a leading probity and process adviser.

A common characteristic of his projects is that they are high value and transformative and, as a result, raise novel and complex legal issues.

Over his 30 years at AGS, Paul has worked on numerous commercial matters. He became Team Leader of the Commercial team in Melbourne in 1998 and, in 2007, became Deputy General Counsel Commercial. In addition to his service as a government lawyer, Paul served as an officer in the Australian Army Reserve for over 18 years. He received the Reserve Force Decoration (RFD) for completing 15 years commissioned service in the Army Reserve.

Paul worked on some of the largest privatisation projects undertaken in Australia. Many of the Defence projects Paul has worked on have involved complex procurement models – including the public–private partnership projects, government-to-government transactions and multi-stage procurements. Some of these projects represent the largest Defence and Commonwealth projects ever undertaken.

Clients have commended his expertise, integrity and leadership, reflecting the highest standards of professionalism.

This honour reflects great credit on Paul and demonstrates the value and importance of the commercial work performed by AGS in the Commonwealth interest.

Congratulations, Paul.
