Recent senior appointments to AGS tax practice
AGS's Tax team leader, Jane Lye, is delighted to welcome a new tax law specialist, Lee Benjamin (left), who brings added depth in international taxation law to our practice. Jane is also pleased to announce the recent promotion of Matthew Walsh (right) to Special Counsel, recognising his vast experience within our tax practice.
Senior Executive Lawyer Lee Benjamin has substantial experience in taxation. He has previously led the tax practice at an international law firm in Hong Kong and China. As a private practice tax lawyer, Lee focused on advisory and disputes matters – designing, implementing and defending tax strategies for operations and transactions involving Australia, Asia and beyond.
Lee has advised on the tax issues arising from public and private company mergers and acquisitions, equity and debt capital markets transactions, finance and service arrangements, intellectual property exploitation and related-party transactions. He has likewise advised on the tax implications of employee remuneration and carried interest arrangements.
Special Counsel Matthew Walsh is a recognised tax law expert and specialises in tax technical litigation and advice, and tax debt-recovery and insolvency litigation and advice. He has extensive experience, spanning over 2 decades, in the conduct and management of large and complex tax litigation. He has acted for the Commissioner of Taxation in numerous tax disputes covering a wide variety of issues arising under different tax regimes, including income tax, fringe benefits tax, PAYG withholding, superannuation guarantee charges and the GST.
Matthew is also a Certified Practising Accountant, a Fellow of both the Financial Services Institute of Australia and The Tax Institute, and a member of the Law Society of NSW. In May this year, he will be speaking at The Tax Institute's 2018 National Infrastructure Conference in Melbourne.
