Matthew Blunn starts role as the Australian Government Solicitor

Secretary of the Attorney-General’s Department, Katherine Jones PSM, has announced the appointment of Matthew Blunn as the next Australian Government Solicitor.

The AGS undertakes a significant role in the department leading the AGS Group in delivering expert legal services to the Australian Government and managing complex, systemic, and precedent-setting issues on behalf of the Commonwealth.

Matthew has been an integral part of AGS for the past 23 years and has been the National Leader of Dispute Resolution since 2011. During this time, Matthew has provided expert legal services to the Commonwealth, handling matters of great significance.

Matthew has acted as The AGS and AGS Chief Operating Officer on multiple occasions, overseeing the operations of all 3 practice groups within AGS.

Matthew’s appointment follows a highly competitive recruitment process comprising a number of extremely strong candidates and Matthew joins an esteemed list of public lawyers who have held this important position in the APS.

In taking up the role, Matthew thanked the former AGS, Michael Kingston, for his 7 years of outstanding leadership and for leaving the organisation in a strong and highly-respected position.
