How laws are made: An overview of the legislative process

Who should attend

This course has been designed for government lawyers and policy officers who are new to the legislative process or who are in agencies with a significant legislative program. It will be useful for anyone who has a role in developing policy or instructing legislative drafters.

Course outline

The course will follow through each step in the Commonwealth law-making process, from initial policy development to the passage of legislation. Topics covered include:

  • policy development and policy approvals
  • the legislative drafting process
  • Parliamentary processes for introduction and passage of bills.

Detailed materials will be given to each participant for use in the course and for future reference.

Objective

Participants will gain an increased understanding of the Commonwealth legislative framework, as well as the detailed processes involved in making policy into law.

Our presenters are senior lawyers who have had extensive experience of legislative development, machinery of government and statutory interpretation.

Duration

This is a half-day course delivered online. This course offers 3 CPD points.

Cost

Standard fee – $460 per person (inclusive of GST). Course numbers are limited to 20, and courses will only be held if we receive a sufficient number of registrations.
