Who should attend
This course is designed for Commonwealth officers who need to understand how regulations and other legislative instruments are made and how they work. The course will benefit lawyers who advise on the interpretation and scope of legislative instruments, or assist with making them. It will also benefit non-lawyers whose responsibilities include making or administering legislative instruments.
Course outline and objectives
This 2.5-hour course aims to give Commonwealth officers an understanding of the what, how and why of legislative instruments: what they are, how they are made and why we need to get them right.
The course examines:
- the different kinds of legislative instruments and their function
- the process of making legislative instruments: the Legislation Act 2003
- the rules for what legislative instruments can and cannot do
- interpreting legislative instruments.
The course is interactive and discussion-based, and uses examples and practical exercises to illustrate key concepts. Course materials will be provided to each participant.

Our presenters are AGS lawyers who have a great depth of knowledge of the government environment, and who have practised extensively in this area of law.

This is a 2.5-hours course delivered online. This course offers 2 CPD points.
Cost
Standard fee – $340 (inclusive of GST) per person. No more than 20 people will be accepted on each course, and courses will only be conducted if we receive sufficient nominations.
